Hussey predicts fierce contest

NatWest Series

Australian batsman David Hussey spoke to about the forthcoming NatWest Series

David Hussey is anticipating a hard-fought battle when Australia take on England in five NatWest Series one-day internationals.

Hussey, 34, and the rest of Australia’s squad arrived in the UK this week and will take on Leicestershire at Grace Road tomorrow in their opening tour match.

The ODI series then gets under way on June 29 at Lord’s, and both teams appear to have reasons to be optimistic.

England’s victories over West Indies at The Ageas Bowl and Kia Oval wrapped up a sixth successive series win on home soil in the 50-over format, ahead of Friday’s final match at Headingley Carnegie.

Australia, meanwhile, remain the number-one ranked team in ODI cricket and will doubtless be inspired by the prospect of taking on their old adversaries.

“It’s probably a pinnacle, playing Australia v England,” Hussey told “I think everybody wants to watch it

“We’re ranked number one in the world and England are coming thick and fast.

“England play particularly well at home; they know their grounds and their conditions, so we will have to be at our best to beat them.”

Hussey made no attempt to hide his attachment to Nottinghamshire, with whom he has enjoyed numerous stints as an overseas player, when asked about England’s chief threats.

“Broad, Swann and Patel are three of the best one-day cricketers going around and play at a great county, so I think we have to nullify their existence in order to win,” the middle-order batsman said with a grin.

“That’s all we are really concerned about, just the Notts boys. They are very talented boys and very well coached.”

Ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Leicestershire, he added: “We just want to hit the ground running and execute our skills as best as we possibly can. I think a few people will be jostling for positions. It’s a very competitive squad we’ve got out here.

“We have to adapt as quickly as possible and once we do I think we will execute our skills perfectly.”
