Jadeja handed India call

NatWest Series

Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja, right, is set to join India's squad ahead of the first one-day international against England at the Emirates Durham ICG

India have called up all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to replace Gautam Gambhir for the remainder of their tour of England.

Gambhir was ruled out of the limited overs series yesterday due to the concussion he sustained during the fourth Test at the Kia Oval last week.

The left-hander has still been troubled by impaired vision and was ordered to have "complete rest" after he saw a specialist in Manchester ahead of tonight's Twenty20 international at Old Trafford.

In his absence India have opted to recall left-armer Jadeja, after the 22-year-old missed out on their successful World Cup squad, to an injury-depleted team.

Jadeja, who has 35 ODI caps, joins RP Singh, Varun Aaron and Ajinkya Rahane as injury replacements and is due to meet up with the squad before Saturday's first one-dayer at the Emirates Durham ICG.

A statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed Jadeja's arrival while also confirming the results of the tests on Gambhir yesterday.

"Gautam Gambhir fell backwards and banged his head against the ground while fielding on 20th August 2011, in the final Test vs England at the Oval," it read.

"He was diagnosed of mild concussion by the attending sports physician and neurologist. He was sent for a precautionary CT and MRI scan of his head and neck which was reported as normal.

"He has been resting since and his symptoms have improved. However, he still complains of some visual disturbance and inability to focus on an object for long.

"The ophthalmologist (eye specialist) has reported Gautam’s eyes as perfectly normal and the symptoms have been put down to the mild concussion.

"Gautam has been advised to take rest and is expected to recover spontaneously without any further medical intervention.

"He will be returning to India shortly. Ravindra Jadeja has been chosen as his replacement. Suresh Raina has been nominated as vice-captain for the ODI series."

After tonight's Twenty20 international in Manchester, India meet England in five ODIs.
