Moore eyes happy ending

David Moore remains optimisitc over his side's chances in the shortened form of the game

West Indies coach David Moore is backing his side to break their duck against England during the forthcoming NatWest Twenty20 internationals and one-day series.

The Windies were beaten 3-0 by England in the npower Test series and the signs were not encouraging for the limited-overs contests during their 51-run defeat to Derbyshire in the Twenty20 warm-up game on Sunday.

The tourists were skittled for just 84 in 15.4 overs at the County Ground, but Moore believes there is enough talent in the squad capable of providing at least some small crumbs of comfort before heading back to the Caribbean in a fortnight.

“England keep talking about being ruthless so I don’t think that is going to change too much,” he said.

“I think they are going to be trying their very best, be very keen and committed and looking to send us home without any sort of win on the board.

“We are keen to counter that, but we will worry about our own problems and work on those and make them worry about their own.

“We can win some games against England in these matches coming up, absolutely. We believe we are a good one-day side. We can play very well.

“We have got some dynamic cricketers and we want to end the tour on a high. This is a wonderful tour and we have played some reasonable cricket throughout and some very good cricket on occasions.

“But it is all about consistency. That is what I’ve talked about from day one of the tour.

“There will be some things we can take from the tour but it is not always about looking for positives. It is all about looking for ways you can improve.”

Moore added: “Of course, it was a disappointing result against Derbyshire. We’ve just got to review how we played. That’s the key. You don’t get too concerned about the result.

“It’s the mistakes you worry about and the poor application of skills. We’ve got to look at that and we’ve got to apply ourselves better and we’ve got to look to improve our game but we are capable of that.

“I just hope a few lessons have been learnt. We would be going pretty badly if we haven’t learnt any lessons from Sunday’s game.”

The Windies complete their preparations for Thursday’s opening Twenty20 international at the Brit Oval by facing the PCA Masters at Arundel on Tuesday evening.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul (arm and knee), Devon Smith (thigh) and Denesh Ramdin (quad) did not play at Derby while Fidel Edwards (ankle) was unable to bowl.

But Moore is confident of having a clean bill of health for the first meeting with a Paul Collingwood-led England.

He said: “Chanderpaul will be fine and Smith and Ramdin as well. They were rested at Derby as a precaution more than anything.

“If it had been an international game we would have probably been able to play the three guys who stood down.

“Fidel will also be fit to bowl - if he is in the team.”
