Paul Collingwood produced a fine all-round display to help England to a comprehensive six-wicket win over West Indies in the second NatWest Series ODI in Bristol.

Collingwood picked up 3-16 from six overs to back up the efforts of Stuart Broad (4-46) as the tourists were dismissed for just 160, despite 50 from Dwayne Bravo.

The Durham all-rounder then added a brisk unbeaten 47 with the bat to guide England over the line with 14 overs to spare.

Opener Ravi Bopara made an attractive 43, while Owais Shah added 38 before being run out with four needed to win.

The victory puts England 1-0 up in the three-match series, following the washout at Headingley Carnegie on Thursday, and they will hope to continue their winning run against the Windies in Tuesday’s final one-dayer at Edgbaston.

England handed a debut to Middlesex batsman Eoin Morgan, who has previously played international cricket for Ireland.

There was no place in the tourists’ line-up for Fidel Edwards, with Ravi Rampaul coming in to the team.

The hosts started superbly in the field after Strauss had won the toss and elected to field on a glorious morning.

Broad made the breakthrough when he trapped Lendl Simmons lbw with the final ball of his second over.

Ramnaresh Sarwan followed for a duck in Broad’s next over when he edged a loose drive to wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

Chris Gayle struck some lusty blows in a typically aggressive innings of 31 from 28 balls at the top of the order.

However, after launching Graeme Swann’s first ball of the innings for six, the West Indies skipper was bowled off his pads by the off-spinner's next delivery looking to repeat the trick.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Bravo were handed the task of rebuilding the West Indies innings and they moved the score past 100 without any serious dramas.

It was a surprise, therefore, to see the former throw his wicket away in such casual fashion, as he skied an attempted pull off Tim Bresnan straight into the hands of Strauss at short third man.

Stuart Broad

Stuart Broad picked up wickets in each of his first two overs to put England on top and eventually finished with 4-46

Bravo reached his fourth ODI fifty from 55 balls, but failed to add to his score before he was bowled in Collingwood’s first over attempting an expansive drive.

England’s World Twenty20 captain then picked up the wicket of Denesh Ramdin to give him figures of 2-4 from his opening two overs.

Jerome Taylor was run out for one before Kieron Pollard perished in identical fashion to Bravo to give Collingwood his third scalp.

Sulieman Benn became the next Windies batsman to fall to an injudicious stroke as he heaved an attempted pull off Broad into the hands of a tumbling Bopara at midwicket.

And Broad swiftly ended the innings when a short delivery took the glove of Rampaul and looped into the hands of Swann at slip.

England’s openers had to face a half-hour session before lunch and made the perfect start with Taylor’s first over costing 11 runs.

Strauss was given a life in the second over, bowled by Rampaul, when he offered a sharp chance to Pollard at cover only for the ball to slip through the all-rounder’s hands.

Bopara looked in good touch as he hit Rampaul for consecutive boundaries in the sixth over, although he also had a let-off when he edged the bowler’s next ball just short of the slip cordon.

Strauss then fell to Taylor when he top-edged an attempted on-side flick into the hands of Darren Sammy, running in from slip.

That brought Prior to the crease, although he was almost run out without facing as Bopara called him through for a quick single.

Bopara continued to impress after the interval and moved into the twenties with a delightful clip through midwicket for four off Taylor.

With England at 48 for one after 10 overs, the Windies opted to take their bowling powerplay immediately.

And the introduction of Sammy in the 14th over led to a breakthrough as Prior edged the ball to Gayle at slip - the Windies skipper clinging on at the second attempt after fumbling the initial chance.

New batsman Shah took 13 balls to get off the mark before clubbing Bravo for a superb four over midwicket.

Yet it was Bravo who struck next for the tourists as he picked up the crucial wicket of Bopara - lbw to a ball of full length.

England could have wobbled at this stage, but Shah and new batsman Collingwood combined superbly in a stand of 76 for the fourth wicket.

Collingwood was initially the aggressor and clubbed Bravo over long off for six to move to 18 off as many balls.

With the winning line in sight, Shah also went on the front foot but he was run out at the death following a superb diving stop and throw from Pollard.

Shah's dismissal gave debutant Morgan the opportunity for a brief spell at the crease and the 22-year-old survived a missed stumping chance off Benn before picking up the winning run with a clip into the leg side.
