Rain rules at Headingley

NatWest Series

Headingley

Rain had the final say at Headingley, where the first match of the one-day series was abandoned after torrential rain

The opening match of the NatWest Series between England and West Indies at Headingley Carnegie was washed out without a ball being bowled.

Torrential rain overnight and this morning left the outfield saturated and, despite the sun shining for much of the afternoon, the installation of a new drainage system in the winter and the determined efforts of the groundstaff, the pitch failed to dry sufficiently.

Umpires Nigel Llong and Steve Davis abandoned the game shortly before 3.15pm, with the ground deemed unfit for play.

Though the decision was greeted by boos from sections of the crowd, the officials had little option but to call the game off with surface water still on certain sections of the outfield.

All 11,000 fans who bought tickets for today's game will receieve a full refund.

The sides meet at Bristol on Sunday, with the final game of the three-match series scheduled for Edgbaston next Tuesday.
