James Anderson celebrates Brendon McCullum's wicket

New Zealand's bowlers took their team to a 22-run victory as they carried on from where England's had left off, with ball dominating bat in the third match of the NatWest Series at Bristol.

Tim Southee took four wickets, including that of England's top-scorer Paul Collingwood lbw for 34, as they failed to chase down 183 for victory.

Kyle Mills also impressed for the Black Caps as he made his highest one-day international score and then took two wickets to set the ball rolling.

He had Luke Wright caught at second slip with the fourth delivery of the opening over and then added the scalp of Kevin Pietersen who flicked the ball on the walk for Grant Elliott to take the catch.

Ian Bell and Ravi Bopara made sure England kept themselves in the hunt, reaching 61 for two in the first 15 overs, but their partnership did not last much longer as Bell slapped a wide delivery from Elliott straight to cover.

Elliott followed it up by having Bopara well-caught by Jamie How in the gully as England faltered to 64 for four.

That quickly became 64 for six when Owais Shah and Tim Ambrose were each caught in the slips off Southee in a double wicket maiden.

Collingwood came in at a situation in which he tends to prosper and he gave every sign of rescuing England from their perilous position until he fell with 43 balls remaining and 31 runs still needed.

He and Graeme Swann had put on 65 for the seventh-wicket before the latter was dismissed by Scott Styris for a well-made 29.

Stuart Broad got a thin edge through to Gareth Hopkins who parried the ball before taking the catch at the second attempt.

They did not manage to add to their score of 160 as Chris Tremlett was caught by Daniel Vettori off Grant Elliott to end the innings.

Brendon McCullum had earlier crashed 17 off 11 balls, with James Anderson coming in for some harsh treatment.

The hard-hitting batsman thumped a four and then heaved Anderson across the line for six before following it up with a deft flick off his legs for another four.

But the bowler got his man at the end of the same over when he drove on the up for Pietersen to take a leaping catch at mid-off.

How eventually got frustrated at his lack of scoring and chopped Broad into his middle stump, having made 10 off 33 balls.

The extra pace and bounce of Tremlett accounted for Styris who tried to get out of the way of the ball but saw it brush his gloves to be caught behind.

Broad, who bowled his 10 overs right through going for just 14, bowled Ross Taylor as the batsman was late on his shot and saw the ball cannon into his off stump.

Kyle Mills

Kyle Mills goes for his shots in the last two overs to boost the New Zealand total to 182

New Zealand's luck was summed up when Anderson slipped in his delivery stride and bowled a full toss to Daniel Flynn, who swiped the ball up in the air and was caught by Tremlett at mid-on.

Collingwood dropped a difficult chance off Hopkins at backward point, but he had the same batsman caught by substiute fielder William Porterfield on the boundary in the next over, to bring Daniel Vettori to the crease.

The New Zealand captain had a life on 15, when Ambrose failed to take a chance behind the stumps off Collingwood, but he soon chipped Wright into the air for Shah to take the catch running round at mid-on.

Elliott and Mills were left to repair the damage, with the former particularly impressing.

He brought up his maiden one-day international fifty with a cheeky shot down to third man. It came off 99 balls, and included only two fours, after two and a quarter hours at the crease.

With two overs remaining Mills decided to go for his shots and launched Anderson for a six and Elliott drove an attempted yorker through point for four to bring up the 50-run partnership.

However, Anderson got his revenge once more as Elliott tried another big shot, but picked out Wright on the square leg boundary.

Wright was brought on to bowl the final over and was given immediate reward when Southee hit the ball off the toe of the bat straight to Pietersen for a first-ball duck.

However, he took some clatter with Mills at the striker's end, going for two fours and a magnificent six, as the batsman attempted to give himself a total at which to bowl.

He was finally out to the last ball of the innings, having made 47 off 40 balls, when he swivelled his hips and pulled the ball for Collingwood to take a simple catch.

Those runs proved to be vital to the outcome, with the series now drawn at 1-1 and two games left to play.
