West Indies squad - NatWest International T20s 2011

NatWest International T20

Darren Sammy

Darren Sammy, captain
The first player from St Lucia to represent West Indies, Sammy sprung to prominence on Test debut at Old Trafford in 2007 when he claimed 7-66 in a losing cause against England. Bowling - at a brisk, if not express, pace - remains his strongest suit, but he is also capable with the bat, particularly in the shorter form.

Miles Bascombe
Bascombe has represented West Indies A and earned his first call-up to the senior side for the two-match Twenty20 series against England. An aggressive opener, the 25-year-old represents the Combined Campuses & Colleges in domestic cricket.

Johnson Charles
Charles is another player who arrives in England hoping to make his international bow. A top-order batsman who can also keep wicket, he has already featured for West Indies A and plays his domestic cricket for the Windward Islands. Like captain Darren Sammy, the 22-year-old hails from the island of St Lucia.

Danza Hyatt
Hyatt has flourished in domestic t20 cricket in recent years, averaging almost 39 in the shortest form of the game at a strike-rate of 135. He also bowls useful medium-pace, but it is his batting that attracted the attention of the national selectors. The Jamaican made his ODI and international t20 debuts earlier this year and will be keen to make the most of another opportunity.

Marlon Samuels

Marlon Samuels
Samuels returned to international cricket this year, having seen his career tarnished by match-fixing allegations and a two-year ban from the ICC. The all-rounder’s talent, particularly with the bat, has never been in question, but he is running out of time to live up to his immense potential.

Dwayne Smith
Smith is a powerful all-rounder who will be looking to resurrect his international career, having last played for West Indies in March 2010. A veteran of 77 one-day internationals, he also has a Test century to his name and is sure to represent a danger to England should he rediscover anything like his best form.

Derwin Christian, wicketkeeper
The designated wicketkeeper for the two matches, Christian has a modest record with the bat in first-class cricket but is capable of scoring rapidly in the t20 format. Batting at number nine, he thumped 40 not out off just 13 balls to help Guyana to victory over the Combined Campuses & Colleges in the 2010-11 Caribbean T20.

Christopher Barnwell
Another seam bowling all-rounder, Barnwell made his Twenty20 international debut in April against Pakistan, scoring 11 not out. Six weeks later, he cracked an unbeaten 16-ball 34 against India, although this was not enough to prevent the Windies suffering defeat. He has impressed in domestic cricket for Guyana with his ability to vary his pace and maintain a consistent line and length.

Andre Russell

Andre Russell
Although he considers himself a bowling all-rounder, Russell demonstrated his ability with the bat with a violent unbeaten 92 from 64 balls in an ODI against India in June. Capable of not inconsiderable pace, he nonetheless struggled to make an impression on Test debut against Sri Lanka last November.

Fidel Edwards
After bursting on to the international scene as an exciting raw paceman in 2003, Edwards is now the leader of a youthful bowling attack. His slingy round-arm action has been compared to that of Jeff Thomson and he, like the legendary Australian fast bowler, has seen his career plagued by injury. At his best, however, he remains a potent threat.

Krishmar Santokie
A left-arm seamer who played for West Indies Under-15s in England more than a decade ago, Santokie impressed in the inaugural Caribbean T20 in 2010, taking five wickets against Trinidad & Tobago. In his 13 domestic t20 outings, the Jamaican has claimed 26 wickets at an average of just 9.57 and has benefited from a willingness to pitch the ball up.

Ashley Nurse
At 22, Nurse has yet to play a first-class game and has featured in just one List A match, yet this did not prevent him from making his West Indies debut in the Twenty20 international against Pakistan in April. An off-spinner who represents Barbados, he claimed 5-26 against Trinidad & Tobago in the 2010-11 Caribbean T20, including the wickets of Darren Bravo, Lendl Simmons and Denesh Ramdin.

Devendra Bishoo

Devendra Bishoo
This talented leg-spinner featured on the shortlist for the ICC’s Emerging Player of the Year award. Bishoo made an immediate impression on his ODI debut against England in the 2011 World Cup, taking 3-34 from 10 overs. Since then, he has established himself as a regular in all formats and appears to have a bright future ahead of him.

Nkruma Bonner
Although Bonner remains extremely inexperienced, a return of 17 wickets in his first 11 four-day matches for the Combined Campuses & Colleges at an average of 20 suggests the leg-spinner could be one to watch. He also bats in the middle order and already has three first-class fifties to his name, including a top score of 87.
