Moores support for Vaughan
Peter Moores wasted no time in giving his backing to captain Michael Vaughan as he was unveiled as the new England coach.
Moores was appointed as Duncan Fletcher's successor last week in the midst of England's World Cup campaign.
Though he is yet to meet with Vaughan, who arrived back in London from the West Indies on Wednesday morning with the rest of the squad, Moores gave the skipper a ringing endorsement to remain in the post.
"Michael is going to be captain for that first Test," said Moores. "His reputation as a captain goes without saying.
"He would have some fairly interesting views on what happened this winter, and it's important I speak to Michael about that and everything else."
Fletcher's strong bond with Vaughan is widely acknowledged as one of the most important factors in England's success in recent years.
And Moores is keen to form an equally formidable alliance with Vaughan as he prepares for the biggest job in English cricket and, arguably, the world.
"It's one of the key relationships," Moores said. "There are lots of things that make teams tick, that makes teams work, and the coach-captain relationship is one of the crucial things."
Moores admits he knows some players better than others, but he has nothing but positive words for Vaughan from the limited experience he has of working with him.
"I was lucky - Michael came out to Perth before Christmas," added Moores, referring to Vaughan's presence with the academy squad as he stepped up his rehabilitation from knee trouble during the winter's Ashes.
"To watch him operate as a man was very impressive.
"He handled himself very well - he worked well within the squad and with the other players.
"Michael's record as captain is outstanding and I'm looking forward to working with him."
