New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder has apologised for the late-night bar incident which ended his Test hopes but denied he had an alcohol problem.
The opener was ruled out for the season after surgery on a right-hand injury sustained by breaking a window in a Christchurch bar in the early hours of Sunday morning, after the Kiwis' ODI win over England.
The 23-year-old, who it later emerged had also broken team protocols by staying out late the night before the game, abused emergency staff when he was taken to hospital.
Ryder read a statement before New Zealand Cricket chief Justin Vaughan faced the press in a conference at the board's headquarters, located just metres from the Stock Exchange bar where the incident took place.
He said: "My behaviour was pathetic, and I will be apologising to them. I apologise to the public and all the people who have supported me. My behaviour was unacceptable
"I understand there are issues I need to address. I am committed to working with New Zealand Cricket to get back on track and back in the team."
But when asked about his drinking, Ryder stated: "I don't think I have a problem."
Vaughan expressed his organisation's disapproval with the player's actions, but insisted they would stand by him.
Ryder joined Wellington from Central Districts in 2005 after a similar incident forced him to leave his home province.
"We want Jesse in the Black Caps, but we are disappointed in him and for him," he said.
"We want Jesse to acknowledge that he has issues that need to be addressed and we want to support him to address those issues. Unless he does commit to addressing those issues there will be no place for him.
"Jesse was inducted into the team and understood what was expected of him, and the team management believed that he was fitting in well with those processes.
"We understand the pressures he has been under and will review our processes to ensure that they meet the needs of players in his position."
Ryder will undertake voluntary work on the recommendation of the hospital staff when his injury heals.
He will not be banned from the Black Caps future matches, but his next cricket, if selected, is likely to be a proposed New Zealand A tour of India in September.
