Andrew Strauss hailed England’s supporters as the best in the world after receiving a special commemorative artwork to mark his retirement from professional cricket.

An immensely popular figure among England fans, Strauss became the subject of numerous tributes when he called time on his career in August.

Comments submitted on e-mail and via the ECB’s social networking sites were duly put together to form a montage of the former England captain kissing the Ashes urn.

After being presented with the framed image by Hugh Morris, ECB Managing Director - England Cricket, Strauss expressed his gratitude.

Former England captain Andrew Strauss displays his retirement gift - a special artwork comprised of messages from supporters. "It's very humbling," said the 35-year-old

“That is outstanding,” said the 35-year-old. “That’s obviously going to take pride of place in one of the walls of my house.

“To receive this and see some of the words people have written about me is making me feel very humble and honoured to have captained England. More than anything, I’m very proud to have been part of the England cricket team.

“The great thing about this is that it is a link to the people out there who support us. I’ll spend a bit of time over the next few days looking over the fine print of it all, but it’s very humbling. It’s fantastic.”

Elaborating on his respect for those who follow England home and away, Strauss added: “It’s great for me to take this opportunity to thank all of the fans.

“As players we know how important it is to feel like there are people out there supporting us, and we know how many thousands of you have such a keen and active interest in how the England cricket team does.

“England’s the best-supported cricket team in the world, especially away from home when you go to some pretty intimidating places in the world where the opposition have got a fairly strong in-built advantage because they know the conditions better than us.

“To have a large following of supporters there is hugely motivating for us and I’m always proud and in some ways blown away by how many people do make the effort to come and see us on tour.”

“So thanks a lot, keep supporting and let’s hope that English cricket continues to go from strength to strength.”

After reading a selection of the messages, a typically modest Strauss concluded: “They’re all pretty nice, but I suppose that’s what happens when you retire. Suddenly people are nice about you when you finish!”

Andrew Strauss signed 20 copies of the artwork and you can win one. Click here to enter the competition.
