Vaughan focuses strictly on EDP U17s

Follow the England Development Programme, including England Under-19s

Michael Vaughan and Strictly partner Natalie Lowe gave the EDP U17s a dancing lesson

Michael Vaughan was England’s most elegant batsman of his era and the former national captain is now taking part in the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Vaughan and dance partner Natalie Lowe visited the England Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough this week to put the England Development Programme Under-17 squad through its paces.

Vaughan, who retired from playing three years ago and turns 38 on Monday, believes there are many skills that cricketers can learn from dancing.

“We’ve all laughed at dancing in the past but I think from my experiences from doing it, it requires very similar skills from what cricket is. You need your dedication, concentration. Your foot movement and timing has to be spot on. So there are a lot of transferable skills that you can apply to cricket from the dancing world,” he told

“Particularly the programme when they’re at that age, you want to try and surprise them and put them under a little bit of pressure. And it was a little bit awkward because some of them were ‘girls’ and they were having to be led by the ‘boys’,” Vaughan added.

“I kind of put myself back to when I was that age. I would have hated doing what they did this morning but they just bought into it and they did it and at the end the challenge and the pressure of having to dance off, that kind of pressure, it’s not playing in front of thousands or taking a catch or hitting the winning runs, but it’s still pressure and you still want to deliver.

“You can just tell from their faces that they were just desperate to win the dance-off, desperate to get the footsteps right and desperate to impress. That’s what playing cricket, playing sport, is all about and they just managed to do it with the dancing this morning.”
