England captain Michael Vaughan has undergone X-rays that confirmed he has an undisplaced fracture to his right middle finger.
Vaughan suffered the injury when he was struck on the hand whilst batting for Yorkshire against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl on Thursday.
He has been ruled out of the remainder of the LV County Championship match, and will undergo further assessment ahead of the 1st npower Test against West Indies at Lord's, which starts on May 17.
Vaughan, making his first championship appearance since returning from World Cup duty, was hit by a delivery from Australian seamer Stuart Clark.
Yorkshire physio Scott McAllister said: "My first reaction was that it wasn't a serious problem, but results from the hospital show that he has suffered a fractured finger.
"It's desperately bad luck for Michael after the succession of problems he's had to contend with, and we will be monitoring his progress over the next few days.
"It's too early to say with absolute certainty how long he will be out for," he told the Yorkshire Post.
Vaughan recovered from a hamstring problem in time to play for England in their World Cup campaign, having recently made a successful comeback from career-threatening knee injuries.
He has not played in England's last 15 Tests.
