Michael Vaughan is keen to feature on the winter tours of India and West Indies

Michael Vaughan has welcomed the news that he has been awarded a central contract by the England and Wales Cricket Board for 2008-09.

There have been question marks over Vaughan’s international future since he resigned as captain in the wake of the third npower Test against South Africa early last month.

He played no part in the fourth Test triumph at the Brit Oval, and returned to county duty with Yorkshire intent on proving his worth to the England selectors.

Though Vaughan has scored just 29 runs in three LV County Championship innings on his return to domestic duty, he was one of 12 players today given 12-month contracts running until the end of next season

“I am delighted to get a new central contract which shows me that I still have an international future,” said Vaughan, who has held such a contract since they were introduced in 2002.

Vaughan is keen to use the remainder of the county season to press his claims for a place in the tour party to India and West Indies either side of Christmas, while the Ashes series against Australia next summer looms on the horizon.

“I'm looking forward to the last few weeks of the season with Yorkshire where I hope to score some runs and help my county to safety in Division One and secure a place in England's touring side,” he added.

Yorkshire chief executive Stewart Regan said: “I am delighted for Michael. His leadership qualities and track record against Australia in particular have persuaded the selectors to back him for at least another year.

“I hope he proves the doubters wrong and uses the next few weeks to demonstrate what a quality player he is.”

Matthew Hoggard, Vaughan’s Yorkshire team-mate, was overlooked for a central contract for the first time, having failed to regain his place in the Test team after being dropped in New Zealand earlier this year.

“We are all disappointed for Matthew but we know that he has the strength of character to bounce back from today’s announcement,” added Regan.

“It is great news for all Yorkshire CCC fans that we will have him in the squad next year.”
