Leicestershire wicket-keeper Paul Nixon revealed Michael Vaughan hinted he was in line for an England call-up.
Nixon was a surprise inclusion in England’s one-day squad for the Commonwealth Bank Series which also involves Australia and New Zealand.
The 36-year-old spoke recently to the Ashes-winning captain, who suggested Nixon may be involved in the tournament which takes place down under in January and February.
"I've spoken to Michael Vaughan a number of times over the past few weeks and he was encouraging me to keep fit because I might be called up for the one-day squad," said Nixon.
"So, although it's still a wonderful surprise to get the chance at this stage of my career, it wasn't a total shock.
"It just goes to show that it is never too late. I have always believed that if I can perform to the best of my ability that an opportunity might come my way to perform at the highest level.
"Over the last two seasons I've played as well as at any other time in my career and the recognition we have gained in winning the Twenty20 Cup this year has certainly put me in the frame."
Nixon will deputise for Chris Read, who is part of the England Test squad currently touring Australia, when the series gets under way in Melbourne on January 12.
"This is a marvellous opportunity for me because if I can perform well in Australia, then I can put myself in contention for the World Cup a few weeks later which would be fantastic," Nixon added.
His call-up means that he has had to rearrange the launch of his benefit year with Leicestershire in 2007 as he flies to Australia on Boxing Day to join up with the England squad.
Nixon was involved with England when he was named as Alec Stewart's understudy for the 2000-01 winter tours of Sri Lanka and Pakistan, without playing a competitive game.
England chairman of selectors David Graveney said: "Paul is a vastly experienced cricketer who knows his game inside out and will bring a great deal of energy to the dressing room.
"He has been very successful in one-day cricket with Leicestershire and will compete for the wicket-keeping spot with Read."
