Vaughan out for England
England captain Michael Vaughan will miss Friday’s Commonwealth Bank Series clash with Australia due to a torn left hamstring.
Vaughan suffered the injury in Tuesday’s victory over New Zealand in Hobart, only his second one-day international appearance after 18 months out with a career-threatening knee injury.
It is still unsure how long the grade one tear will sideline the 32-year-old, with a reassessment due to take place in the next 48 hours.
The tour management must now decide whether Andrew Flintoff - captain for the 5-0 Ashes Test series defeat - or Andrew Strauss, who led the side against Pakistan last summer, take over at the Gabba. An announcement is expected later today.
Regardless of the diagnosis on his injury, Vaughan is expected to stay in Australia to continue planning for the World Cup.
Essex’s Ravi Bopara joins up with the squad this evening as a replacement for Pietersen, while Mal Loye, Lancashire’s explosive opener, is flying in as cover from New Zealand.
