Michael Vaughan will begin his bid to boost his batting form against the students of Leeds University this summer after volunteering to start the season as soon as possible for Yorkshire.

The England captain would have been due a rest after helping to seal a first overseas series win in three years over New Zealand by clinching a 121-runs final Test win at Napier.

But after claiming 123 runs at an average of only 20.50 during the series, Vaughan believes he is need of more hard work and will have just three weeks off before reporting for duty with Yorkshire against Leeds UCCE for a three-day match starting on April 16.

Vaughan and the rest of the England squad are due to report for the opening Test against New Zealand at Lord’s for training on May 13, two days before the start of the match, which gives Vaughan little time to rediscover his touch at the crease.

“It’s frustrating because I felt good coming here this week, but for some reason it just didn’t happen,” admitted Vaughan.

“I lost a little bit of trust and over the next four of five weeks going into that first Test match I’ll have to go and work. I have to try and get some good runs in county cricket to make sure I’m in good form going into that series.”

But having experienced similar dips in form before, he is confident he can turn up at Lord’s with plenty of runs under his belt - starting with Leeds’ students early next month.

“It’s not too far away because I’ve had dips in form before and come back from them so I’m sure it can be fixed, but I am disappointed because I felt I should have got a lot more runs here,” he said.

“I don’t feel completely knackered so I’ll have a few days off and get back in the nets before I play against Leeds University on April 16.”

Andrew Strauss has batted at three for England

Vaughan also hinted England may look at his position in the batting order having opened alongside Alastair Cook and pushed Andrew Strauss into an unfamiliar number three position for this series.

Asked if he would be opening this summer, Vaughan said: “We’ll see. We’ll get back and assess all the options and I’ll get back to Yorkshire and see where they want me to bat first.

“I’ve just got to find my form and make sure I get back into some kind of form. It was there a week ago without the runs in Wellington, but this week it wasn’t there.”

Vaughan will line up for Yorkshire in the first game alongside seamer Matthew Hoggard, who is one of a number of players told to play as soon as possible to try and regain some form.

Hoggard and Steve Harmison will be available from the start of the summer as will Strauss, and Warwickshire pair Ian Bell and wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose.

Alastair Cook, James Anderson, Monty Panesar, Ryan Sidebottom and Stuart Broad do not report for duty to their counties until a week later, while Kevin Pietersen and Paul Collingwood do not return to action until the start of May.
