Sussex have launched a cricket roadshow in a bid to get more children playing the game.
The county hope the ambitious three-year programme will promote the sport through increased access to players, more regular coaching and stronger links with local clubs.
Jointly funded by Sussex sponsor RDF and Sportsmatch, the roadshow - which involves three one-hour coaching sessions - will visit nine schools around the county, starting next week.
It aims to give over 3,500 children access to cricket, which they may otherwise not have had, alongside competitions and incentives for teachers and schools throughout the year.
Sussex chief executive Gus Mackay, whose idea initiated the programme, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to take cricket out to Sussex.
“I know that the enthusiasm and vitality with which the roadshow is run will encourage and motivate more children to embrace the game.“We are extremely grateful to both RDF and Sportsmatch for their magnificent support and now look forward to seeing the results with more children joining local clubs and attending our home matches to support Sussex.”
RDF chief executive Dave Wood added: “As well as being the new main club sponsor, RDF is committed to supporting grass roots cricket in Sussex. This programme is an integral part of that commitment.
“Getting more children to be interested in and to play cricket is the first step in developing the next generation of Sussex cricketers, be they county professionals or village green or club players.”
Matt Parsons, the roadshow co-ordinator, said: “The roadshow will throw the kids head first into Sussex cricket and we want to get them buzzing and excited about the game.
“We want them to have fun with the pros, interact with the games and spark their imagination about cricket and the county club.”
