Dozen reach Cockspur Club T20 finals
The England and Wales Cricket Board today announced the regional finalists who will compete for a place at the first ever Cockspur Club Twenty20 finals day later this month at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff.
The 12 finalists are:
North: South Northumberland (h) v Ormskirk
Midlands: Bracebridge Heath (h) v Harborne
London: Ashford, Bromley, Colchester and Stanmore (at Kent CCC, Canterbury)
South West & Wales: St Just, North Devon, SEPL winners and Sudbrook (at Bovey Tracey CC)
Matches will be played on Sunday September 14, with the four regional winners booking their place at the finals day in Cardiff, which will be televised live on Sky Sports on Sunday September 28.
The 12 teams are drawn from the 25 ECB-accredited Premier League competitions across England and Wales this season and more than 350 teams have played in local competitions to arrive at the regional stages.
Overseas players and professional players are not eligible for the competition, which is designed as a platform for the best homegrown recreational talent.
Mike Gatting, managing director - ECB cricket partnerships, said: "It is a very exciting time for Twenty20 cricket at all levels.
"I am delighted that there has been such an excellent response from the Premier League clubs to this new competition and the prospect of playing in a televised final will be a fantastic incentive for all this weekend's regional finalists."
Steve Elworthy, ICC World Twenty20 tournament director, said: "The tradition of Twenty20 cricket is strongest in England and Wales where it has been the staple of club and youth cricket for decades.
"The inspiration for those who developed Twenty20 for the professional game came directly from here so it is great to see it return to its roots after changing world cricket in the process."
David Smith, Cockspur's global brand director, said: "Cockspur are delighted to expand their involvement in ECB recreational cricket by sponsoring the inaugural Cockspur Club Twenty20.
"The fact that finals day will be broadcast live on Sky Sports is testament to how popular this format of the game is. Both Cockspur and ECB identified the need for a structured Twenty20 competition in the recreational sector and we are thrilled that finals day is almost upon us."
Cockspur are in the first season of a three-year deal with international venues as official spirit of Test match grounds that sees the brand occupying significant advertising placements at venues, as well as a plethora of marketing benefits to enhance product sales, sampling and exclusivity in the spirits sector.
From 1987-90, and latterly since 2004, Cockspur have been proud sponsors of the ECB National Club Knockout Cup, named the Cockspur Cup, the final of which will be held at Lord's tomorrow (Tuesday, September 9) with previous winners Kibworth CC (Leicestershire) taking on Malden Wanderers CC (Surrey). All are welcome and admission is free.
This year's Cockspur Cup winners will be flown to Antigua to watch the inaugural Stanford 20/20 for 20 match, then on to Barbados to compete in the annual Rumsey Pro/Am tournament.
