Clubs compete in U13 national round

ECB U13 National Club Championship

This weekend sees the first national round of the MCC Spirit of Cricket U13 National Club Championship being played, with 18 teams competing for nine slots in round two.

Four teams are into the first national round for the second year running with Sheringham CC (Norfolk), Shrewsbury CC (Shropshire), Peterborough Town CC (Huntingdonshire) and Mildenhall CC (Suffolk) all looking to progress to the next round. Sheringham in particular will be hoping to emulate the class of 2008, who progressed to the National Finals at Oakham School.

The other teams looking to progress include Poole Town CC (Dorset) who host Northwood CC (Isle of Wight); Radcliffe-on-Trent CC (Nottinghamshire) who travel to Lindum CC (Lincolnshire) and Cambridge NCI CC (Cambridgeshire) who host Peterborough Town CC.

Mike Gatting, ECB’s managing director - cricket partnerships, said: “The ECB are delighted that once again a record number of clubs have entered the MCC Spirit of Cricket U13 National Club Championship this year.
“The ECB are proud to continue the relationship with MCC and we understand the importance of the Spirit of Cricket at this age group.”

John Stephenson, assistant secretary of MCC, said: “It’s hugely encouraging to see so many clubs are competing in the tournament.

“It’s a massive year for the sport in this country and we want to see competitive cricket, played hard but fair, at all levels of the game.

“Hopefully the boys and girls will follow the example set by the men and women at the recent ICC World Twenty20, where the cricket was competitive, intense and exciting but played with the utmost respect."

The ECB and MCC would like to wish all remaining clubs well in their pursuit of the coveted Ken Barrington Trophy in 2009.
