North Middlesex edged out Yateley on run rate to take the MCC Spirit of Cricket Under 13 National Club Championship title.

At the end of the four-day finals at Oakham School, where rain plagued the schedule, both North Middlesex and Yateley of Hampshire were unbeaten going into the final round of matches.

Knowing a convincing victory over Sheringham would be enough, North Middlesex triumphed by 39 runs which meant Yateley, despite a comfortable win over Leamington, had to settle for second place due to run rate.

Happy North Middlesex skipper Zulfiqar Azom received the Ken Barrington Cup from Ann Barrington, widow of the former England player and manager.

A record 1,800 teams entered the competition and going into the final round of matches, three teams - North Middlesex, Yateley and Leamington - still had a chance of winning it.

North Middlesex cracked 123 for six against Sheringham with three batsmen, Connor Nurse, Azom and William Armstrong-Fox, retiring after posting thirties.

With a superb display in the field, which included four run outs, they then restricted the Norfolk side to 84 for eight. There were wickets for Nurse, Turrell, Azom and Gole.

Yateley remained undefeated when they cruised past Leamington by eight wickets, but it wasn’t quite enough in terms of run rate.

Phillips was the pick of the Yateley attack, taking 2-13 as his side restricted their opponents to 99 for nine.

In reply Wood set the platform for a successful chase when he retired on 30 leaving Bone and Covers, who were unbeaten on 23 and 17 respectively, to close the game out with 14 balls remaining.

Sheringham won the Spirit of Cricket award for exhibiting excellent sportsmanship throughout their five matches at Finals Week.

John Stephenson, MCC's Head of Cricket, said: "Congratulations to North Middlesex for winning the MCC Spirit of Cricket Under 13 National Club Championship.

"They have played good, positive cricket all week and their win is well deserved. They clearly have some very talented boys how have played as a unit from being very young. All week the game has been played in the right spirit by all competitors.

"To make it this far in the competition is a fantastic achievement and the talent that has been on display is really encouraging for the future."
