Sileby Town see off Horsford challenge
Midlands Regional Final at Moseley CC on Monday August 7
Sileby Town booked their place in the national finals of the Portman Building Society U15 National Club Championships with victory in the midlands regional final at Moseley CC.
This regional final saw the re-emergence of Horsford CC (Norfolk) who had an excellent run in this competition throughout the 1990’s when they were regular Regional Finalists and also won the trophy in 1999.
Included in their team at one stage was Will Jefferson, now plying his trade with Essex.
Horsford batted first on the main ground and led by M Spencely (50) looked like setting a daunting total but a late flurry of wickets restricted them to 137 for six.
Wombourne (Staffs) in reply struggled against the bowling of A Lincoln 4-11 and were restricted to 84 for eight.
In the other semi-final, Wem (Shropshire) scored 119 but made the cardinal error of not batting out their overs despite the best efforts of J Gough (50) and this came back to haunt them as Sileby Town (Leicestershire) made a late charge to victory in the 19th over scoring 120 for four.
In the third place play-off Wombourne scored 167 which proved to be too much for the Wem side to chase down.
In the final, Horsford were asked to bat by Sileby and M Ruddle took 4-33 while three run outs meant that Horsford registered a disappointing 101. Sileby easily chased down this score in 16.5 overs, winning by seven wickets.
