Berkshire's bite hurts Herefordshire
Berkshire remained on course for the Minor Counties Championship Western Division title with an innings-and-44-run demolition of Herefordshire in two days at Finchampstead.
The hosts’ maximum-point win - their fourth in as many games - was founded on first-innings double hundreds from Michael Roberts and Jon McLean, who shared a minor counties record second-wicket stand of 371 in a total of 507 for seven declared.
Berkshire’s former first-class spin trio of Shaun Udal, Chris Peploe and Carl Crowe then snared 14 of Herefordshire’s 20 wickets to complete proceedings with a day to spare.
After Berkshire won the toss, David Barnes was trapped in front for nine but that proved Herefordshire’s only wicket in the first two sessions as Roberts and McLean made hay.
Roberts finally fell for 205 after tea when his side lost five other wickets, with debutant Steve Bevan taking four, but McLean remained unbeaten on 210.
Herefordshire slipped to 28 for two but reached stumps on 91 for no further loss with Faisal Shahid on 42 and Chris Boroughs 31.
Shahid could only add four to his overnight score but Boroughs went on to 77. However, Crowe struck thrice and Udal twice as the visitors were dismissed for 214.
Former England man Udal was the chief destroyer with 5-63 after Herefordshire were asked to bat again, while Peploe picked three wickets. Several batsmen made starts but failed to go on as number seven Tom Austwick top-scored with 47.
