Devon see off Herefordshire
Devon secured their first Minor Counties Championship victory of the season, by five wickets over winless Herefordshire at Sidmouth.
Chris Metters’ second-innings haul of 5-82 in 25.2 overs proved crucial, leaving Devon needing 224 – the lowest total of the match – to claim the spoils.
They duly got their from 41 overs thanks largely to number three Robert Dawson’s rapid 75 from 55 deliveries, following his first-innings 121.
Herefordshire’s number three, Chris Boroughs, led by example in the first innings, hitting 135 out of 317 for nine from the allotted 90 overs after he won the toss.
However, Devon assumed a 56-run lead thanks to Dawson’s 286-run alliance with David Lye, who made 146. The pair had joined forces at 29 for four.
Herefordshire opener Daniel Bassett’s 127 gave his side a fighting chance but Metters ensured Devon would chase an attainable total, restricting the visitors to 268 all out.
