Cowley rips through Wiltshire
Darren Cowley claimed five wickets as 2010 champions Dorset recorded a 26-run victory over Wiltshire in the first Minor Counties Championship match to be played at Devizes.
Chasing 290 to win, Wiltshire were dismissed for 263 with Cowley claiming excellent figures of 5-78 off 36 overs.
Dorset, who won the toss and chose to bat, were heavily reliant on Matt Metcalfe’s 60 as they were bowled out for 285 on the first day. Owen Alsop was the pick of the Wiltshire bowlers with 4-58.
Wiltshire lost wickets at regular intervals on day two and slipped to 130 for eight, needing another 26 to avoid the follow on.
Tom Bowler joined the impressive Ed Kilbee at the crease with the pair putting on 87 for the 9th wicket before the former was out for 46. Kilbee went on to complete an excellent maiden century as Wiltshire totalled 238 in 81 overs.
Dorset’s Glyn Treagus claimed 3-66 while Mark Wolstenholme and Tom Hicks took two wickets apiece.
As Dorset looked to set Wiltshire a challenging total, Aaron Williams, who eventually went on to score 97, shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 81 with Darren Cowley, helping the visitors finished day three on 225 for six.
Wiltshire claimed the remaining four Dorset wickets for just 17 runs on day four to leave themselves 290 to win.
In their chase, Wiltshire again lost early wickets and were reduced to 156 for six when Jayden Levitt was dismissed for an excellent 87.
That brought Tom Morton and Alsop together and the pair added 70 for the seventh wicket before both departing with the score on 226.
A late flurry of runs in a ninth wicket partnership of 34 between Bowler and Tahir Afridi caused Dorset some concern before Wiltshire fell short.
Dorset take 23 points for the victory while Wiltshire collect just six.
