Stewart inspires Herefordshire win
Callum Stewart's 11 wickets helped Herefordshire to their first Minor Counties Championship win of the season, an eight-wicket victory over Dorset inside two days at Brockhampton.
Stewart took a career-best 6-56 to limit Dorset to 213 all out and, after Herefordshire had gained a first-innings lead of 69, he claimed 5-67 to dismiss the visitors for 185.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Steve Adshead’s rapid 73 took the hosts to the verge of a 117-run target, which they overhauled in a mere 17.1 overs to secure their first victory over Dorset since 2002.
Dorset’s decision to bat first backfired when Stewart, who returned the best innings figures for Herefordshire at Brockhampton, struck three times in his third over to leave them 10 for three.
Aaron Williams and Darren Cowley put on 80 for the fourth wicket, but the latter’s 62 was the only significant score of the innings.
Herefordshire openers Dave Exall and Ben Stebbings made immediate inroads into Dorset’s total with an 88-run partnership before departing for 49 and 41 respectively as the hosts closed day one on 171 for four.
Brad Wadlan’s 61 and Charlie Walker’s unbeaten 60, the latter’s maiden fifty for the county, in a total of 282 all out confirmed Herefordshire’s authority on day two.
As in the first innings, Stewart removed openers Chris Mole and George Adolphus. Chris Boroughs and Brad Wadlan then swept through the Dorset middle order and finished with 2-38 and 3-25 respectively.
Some lusty hitting from the tail took the lead into three figures, but Stewart returned to clean up and complete match figures of 11-123.
Although Ben Stebbings fell for nought in the first over, a partnership of 108 between Adshead and Exall all but completed a win that put Herefordshire a point ahead of Dorset in the Western Division.
