Dawson and Lye sink Wiltshire
Wiltshire’s unbeaten run in the MCCA Trophy came to an end when they lost to Devon by five wickets at Trowbridge.
In a match reduced to 45 overs a side because of rain, Wiltshire could manage only 135 for eight thanks largely to Bobby Dawson, who claimed 3-8. There were also two cheap wickets apiece for Ian Bishop and Scott Barlow.
Henry Langford top-scored for Wiltshire with 32, while Steve Bullen, his partner in a fourth-wicket stand of 49, contributed 25 and Alex Senneck 29 not out.
Richard Bedbrook claimed three early wickets to reduce Devon to 20 for four, but David Lye saw them to a modest target with a crucial unbeaten 47.
He received assistance from Josh Bess and Sandy Allen, who made 25 and 25 not out respectively as Devon eased home with more than three overs to spare.
The result was especially harsh on Senneck, who returned admirably economical figures of 1-9 off nine overs. He is not available for Wiltshire’s final group match against Buckinghamshire at High Wycombe on Sunday, which they need to win to have any chance of qualifying.
