Thompson directs Cumberland to Trophy
Chris Thompson’s hat-trick inspired Cumberland to MCCA Trophy glory with a seven-wicket thrashing of Wiltshire over two days at Wormsley.
The seamer ripped out the middle order following a late-afternoon start on Wednesday as Wiltshire limped to 142 for eight from the 36 overs possible on a rain-hit day.
They topped that up to 184 all out on the second morning, but it was insufficient as Cumberland overhauled that total with more than 17 overs to spare.
Two wickets each for Paul Hindmarch and Chris Williams pegged back Wiltshire and Williams’ heroics left them 91 for seven. He bowled Henry Langford before having Thomas Bowler and Owen Alsop caught behind.
Ashur Morrison held the innings together from number six, but he was last out for 59 in the 46th over - a third wicket for Toby Bulcock, who returned 3-25 while Thompson ended with 3-40.
Cumberland suffered the early run-out of James Lowe, but Josh Tolley and Jonathon Miles added 112 for the second wicket to make the result all but certain.
Miles fell to Benjamin Gardner for 41 and Tolley was lbw to Bowler for 67, but captain Gary Pratt and Liam Livingstone eased Cumberland to their first one-day trophy since 1989.
