Berkshire and Cumberland beat rain

Minor Counties MCCA promo

Wet weather yesterday meant only two of the eight games in the opening round of the Minor Counties Knockout Trophy went ahead and both were decided on Duckworth/Lewis.

Defending champions Berkshire beat Wales Minor Counties at Henley-on-Thames and Cumberland defeated Herefordshire at Eastnor.

Seventeen-year-old seamer Tom Nugent made a stunning impact on debut by taking the first four wickets en route to 4-35 as Wales slipped to 51 for four.

From 65 for five, Dion Holden and Tom Baker added 119 in making 56 and 58 respectively and helping the visitors to 219 all out in 49.5 overs.

Rain between innings left Berkshire a target of 206 in 43 overs. Following the cheap loss of Michael Roberts to Alex Jones, David Barnes and James Morris shared a stand of 102 until Jones trapped Barnes in front for 46.

Morris was unbeaten on 51 in a total of 114 for two from 26 overs when play was washed out, meaning a 16-run win for Berkshire.

Cumberland made a worse start than Wales, slumping to 53 for five before Alex Atkinson and Chris Thompson put on 77. They respectively contributed 53 and 40 to a total of 174 for seven from 46 overs.

Herefordshire were set 184 in as many overs as Cumberland faced and, after losing two early wickets, were going well with Ben Stebbings and Chris Boroughs in situ.

However, they fell for 35 and 39 respectively with the score on 98 but, despite 30 from Brad Wadlan, James Lowe’s 5-35 ushered them to 154 all out from 38.5 overs and a 29-run loss.
