Staffs overcome odds
Staffs made a convincing start to their MCCA Trophy campaign by demolishing Northumberland at Gosforth by 123 runs.
Staffs overcame the withdrawal of four of their original selection. New signing Mark Lawson was injured in a car accident on Friday evening, former Yorkshire batsman Chris Taylor and Craig Barker were also injured and Cheadle's Dave Wheeldon was unavailable due to his Worcestershire commitments.
Staffs' innings was anchored by Peter Wilshaw, with 55 from 59 balls, and captain Paul Goodwin, who also reached his half-century.
Nottinghamshire Academy player Ben McGuire added extra impetuous to the Staffs innings with an adventurous 44 from just 25 balls as they posted 292 for six from their 50 overs.
Northumberland were never in the hunt after Will Purser reduced them to 35 for two.
Martin Dale showed some resistance with an innings of 39 before he became one of spinner Gareth Morris’ three victims. Northumberland were ultimately dismissed for 169 with 11 balls remaining.
