Richard Waite took eight wickets in the match and scored a vital half-century to help Northumberland inflict a first Minor Counties Championship defeat of the season on Staffordshire.

Waite’s second-innings 68 was key to Northumberland overhauling a target of 244 on the final day at Knypersley, achieved with three wickets in hand.

Waite returned figures of 3-62 in Staffordshire’s first-innings 282, which featured 75 from Peter Wilshaw and 58 and 41 from James Dawson and Atiq Chishti respectively.

Northumberland, for whom Paul Caughlin made 78, were restricted to 246 for nine in reply - a first-innings deficit of 36 - thanks largely to Paul Byrne’s haul of 6-72 from 32 overs.

However, Waite responded by taking 5-65 as Staffordshire were bowled out for 207 in the second innings. Chishti made 62 and Aaron Jeavons 60.

Northumberland were also thankful for Waite’s prowess with the bat during their pursuit as he led a recovery from 24 for three with a valuable 68.

He was assisted by Caughlin, who struck 43, and an obdurate middle and lower order; numbers six to nine each made at least 20 to carry the visitors to a tense three-wicket win.
