Wadlan stars for Herefordshire
Bradley Wadlan produced a superb all-round performance as Herefordshire claimed their third consecutive victory with a five-wicket triumph over Dorset in their MCCA Trophy clash at Weymouth.
The Welshman shared six wickets with Ed Baylis as Dorset were bowled out for 185 in 47.3 overs and their total would have been a lot lower had Nick Park not contributed an unbeaten 84 at the top of the order.
Wadlan added a half-century, his first for the county, in a second-wicket partnership of 82 with Steve Adshead to get the ball rolling for Herefordshire.
Adshead top-scored with 65 for the visitors and although he fell with 18 still needed, Herefordshire had wickets in hand to complete a hat-trick of successive wins for the first time since 2000.
After Dorset had won the toss and elected to bat, Baylis struck first when he had Chris Mole caught behind for 13.
With the exception of Park, the Dorset top order failed to fire as Baylis then had Glyn Treagus and Darren Cowley trapped in front, while Chris and James Park were also dismissed cheaply.
Nick Park was a calming influence on Dorset, striking 12 fours in his 125-ball innings.
Yet although he and Simon Watkins put on 51 for the seventh wicket, the writing was on the wall once the latter was caught in the deep by Chris Powell off Wadlan.
Wadlan picked up the final two wickets to finish with astonishing figures of 3-5 from 6.3 overs.
Herefordshire’s reply got off to the worst possible start when Dave Exall was caught behind off the fourth ball of the innings.
However, Wadlan and Adshead ensured their would be no collapse, with the former the more attacking of the two before being caught behind off Tom Hicks for 52 from 58 balls.
Skipper Chris Boroughs made 10 before he was dismissed but Adshead then put on 65 for the fourth wicket with Faisal Shahid to get them close to the finish line.
Although both were dismissed, Nick Powell and Baylis saw Herefordshire home with no further alarms in the 44th over.
