Wiltshire rely on youth
Wiltshire gained a remarkable one-wicket win over Wales Minor Counties in their latest MCCA Trophy group match at Pontarddulais on Sunday.
Nick Harrison, 18, took 6-30 and Owen Alsop, 17, struck an unbeaten 69 to see his side home with 10 balls to spare.
Tom Bowler, 20, on his senior county debut, was another youngster to excel, taking 2-20 with his leg-spin and contributing 34 with the bat.
The three products of the county’s youth development programme starred after as many players dropped out on the day, with James Hibberd already unavailable
Wales, who chose to bat in cold conditions with a strong wind blowing down the ground, were 214 all out from a full 50 overs.
Harrison’s haul included three wickets in the final over, as Wales slipped from 150 for four after 40. Daniel Roberts top-scored with 68.
Wiltshire lost regular wickets in their reply and slipped to 114 for eight in the 32nd over.
However, Bowler and Alsop batted sensibly to add 87 for the ninth wicket in 14 overs.
Bowler fell with 14 still needed but Alsop took control, striking a boundary to seal victory.
Wiltshire’s next match in the competition is against Devon at Trowbridge on Sunday 16 May, starting at 11am.
