Wiltshire and Devon progress

Minor Counties MCCA promo

Wiltshire ensured a home MCCA Trophy quarter-final with a 53-run victory over Cornwall who missed out on the knock-out stage to rivals Devon.

Wiltshire’s triumph yesterday at St Austell sees them finish top their Group Three, with three wins, while Cornwall finished one win behind second-place Devon. Wiltshire’s quarter-final will be on Sunday 14 June at Corsham.

Greg Lamb

Choosing to bat first, opener Joe Breet (66) and Greg Lamb (74 not out) were crucial is posting a competitive 289 for six in 50 overs.

Breet and Tom Morton (20) helped the visitors to a fine start, adding 53 in six overs, before Ben Walker (25) and Breet put on 61 for the second wicket. Lamb and James Hayward (47) shared an 84-run alliance for the fourth.

Cornwall, needing to win in 43 overs to overtake Devon, suffered early setbacks due to Alex Senneck’s 3-40 and slipped to 145 for seven.

However, they refused to lie down and a spirited counter attack led by Gavin Edwards (50 not out) took them to 236 all out in the 40th over. Lamb, Ben Walker and Michael Coles claimed two wickets each.

Wiltshire are next in action in their first Minor Counties Championship match, against Wales at Usk, starting on June 7.

James Hibberd returns to captain the side after his wedding and leg spinner Pat Turk comes into the side in place of the unavailable Senneck and James Golding.
