Wiltshire out after Wales defeat
Wiltshire’s hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the MCCA Knockout Trophy were ended as they slipped to a four-wicket defeat at the hands of Wales Minor Counties, who progress to the last eight alongside Devon.
After being invited to bat first at Trowbridge, Wiltshire lost their first three wickets for just 18, although a partnership of 47 between Chris Benham and Joe Breet steadied the ship.
Teenagers Sam Mount and Steve Bullen then took centre stage, striking 76 and 61 respectively and putting on 130 for the sixth wicket as Wiltshire rallied to reach 245 for seven from 50 overs, despite the efforts of Aneurin Norman, who claimed 4-39.
Wales got off to a similarly poor start and slipped to 69 for four, but Norman’s unbeaten 87 helped them to their target with 19 balls remaining.
Wiltshire have included 17-year-old Hampshire Academy bowler James Haggaty in their squad for their final group match against Cornwall, which takes place at Redruth next Sunday.
