Wiltshire repel Roberts
David Roberts’ splendid hundred could not prevent Cornwall slipping to a narrow defeat against Wiltshire in their opening MCCA Trophy encounter.
The hosts triumphed by six runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method in a thrilling Group 2 clash at Devizes CC, despite Roberts’ valiant 113 off 105 balls.
Wiltshire, invited to bat first in overcast conditions, were bowled out for 276 in the final over of the innings, a total built around useful contributions from Mitchell Stokes (52), James Hayward (45), Ryan Watkins (45), James Hibberd (43) and Michael Coles (31).
Justin Stephens impressed for Cornwall with 3-48, but rain checked their momentum when they were 67 for one after nine overs in reply, a delay which saw the target reduced to 248 in 41 overs.
Roberts’ century maintained Cornwall’s hopes of victory, while Chris Hunkin made 44, but the balance of power tilted back towards Wiltshire when they were separated.
Although the last-wicket pair came together with just nine needed for victory, it proved beyond them as Cornwall fell narrowly short. Watkins finished with 3-39 and Hibberd 2-29.
