Granta complete victory before lunch

ECB logo - small version

Cambridge Granta strengthened their grip at the top of the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League table with a comprehensive thrashing of Burwell at Mingay Park.

Granta won the toss and invited Burwell to bat first. As it turned out it was a great decision as the hosts crumbled to 57 all out in the 22nd over.

Granta then knocked off the required runs in 13.2 overs for the loss of three wickets and the game was over before lunch time.

Clacton and Horsford battled out an entertaining draw at Vista Road. Winning the toss and batting first, Horsford made slow progress against the Clacton attack as testified by Jonathan Atkinson's 85 ball 14.

Chris Sabburg confirmed his growing reputation as a run machine with his fourth EAPL hundred of the campaign, scoring 117 from 128 balls with 11 fours and 2 sixes, helping his side to reach 254 for nine from their full 66 overs.

Clacton lost France and Cull before tea and resumed on 39 for two with Ben Foakes (44) and Andy Turner (42) looking in control.

When both were dismissed, there followed a period of consolidation which put the home side behind the clock. Eventually Matt Foakes (35 not out) and Danny Rock (30 not out) decided they could reach the target.

They had a go but found it difficult to reach the boundary, often finding as many as five fielders guarding the rope. Clacton finished on 225 for six from 55 overs.

At The Common, Swardeston got the better of Bury in a nailbiter. Batting first having won the toss, Bury made steady progress reaching 153 for three at one point.

However their middle to late order all failed and they lost their last seven wickets for the addition of only 28 runs. Tom Huggins top scored for Bury with 72 and there were four wickets for Richard Sims and two apiece for Jaden Hatwell and George Walker.

Swardeston's innings was almost a mirror image. Having made their way to 101 for two they then lost Sims (73) while the rest of the order collapsed to 156 for eight and it was game on.

Sensible batting from Jonathan Cooper (24 not out) down the order at eight aided by Michael Eccles saw Swardeston to victory by two wickets in the 51st over. Simon Rees was the most successful of the Bury bowlers, returning 4-47 from 15 overs.

Halstead came out on top of the basement clash with Fakenham at Star Stile. Things were not looking good for the Essex Club as they inserted Fakenham and watched them rack up 232 all out from 63.1 overs.

Halstead's trouble all season has been their batting but on this occasion they successfully chased down the 233 required for victory with three overs remaining to claim a two wicket win and an invaluable 25 points.
