High Wycombe finish top

High Wycombe wheedled out the three points they needed in their draw against Welwyn Garden City to be crowned champions of the Home Counties Premier League 2008.

The title could easily have gone to Banbury, Tring Park, Oxford or Radlett had rain not intervened, leading to one cancelled fixture and two abandonments.

Reigning champions Oxford needed a maximum points win against Radlett to retain their Home Counties Premier League title but having dismissed their opponents for 94, the rain swept in and handed the title instead to High Wycombe.

Banbury were held to a rain affected draw at Henley where remarkably, 78 overs of play proved possible before the umpires were forced to call it a day.

The visitors were slow in their response to Henley's 205 all out, pegged back by former first class players Mark Alleyne and Chad Keegan who restricted Banbury to 125 for two in 33 overs. This draw put Banbury four points behind High Wycombe with Tring Park finishing in third place, four points behind.

At the other end of division one, Slough's match at Falkland was cancelled meaning that if Reading could win at Tring Park they would retain their premier status. It was not to be. Only one over was possible and so Reading and Falkland drop to division Two West next season.
