Former Hampshire batsman Derek Kenway struck a century to rekindle Totton & Eling's prospects in the ECB Southern Electric Premier League following their 124-run win over Hursley Park at Southern Gardens.
Kenway arrived at the crease with the score on at 54-1 and shared an 89-run stand with Damian Shirazi (66) before playing the anchor role in a century partnership with David Banks (54).
Having reached 101, he fell victim to Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Thara Perera who rounded up the middle order to finish with 4-72 as Totton put on 272 for 6.
After a disastrous start, Hursley were steadied by Jimmy Taylor (61) and Raman Prendergast (22) but a decisive spell from Richard Dibden (4-6) put paid to any hopes of matching Totton's total and they were dismissed for 148.
A six-wicket defeat by Bashley (Rydal) left Alton 15 points adrift at the bottom of the table facing relegation. Alton got themselves into a fix against Somerset leg-spin prospect Max Waller (4-27) and were up against it at 64-5 (Ryan Hale 31). Mark Heffernan (28) and David Bull, with a timely 30 not out at the end, lifted Alton’s spirits, but 147 was never likely to test Bashley.
Hampshire Second XI all-rounders Liam Dawson and Benny Howell stole the show as the Academy trounced Andover by a massive 168-runs on a London Road ‘turner.’ Dawson took 5-22 with his left-arm spin after Howell’s century had provided the platform for a sizeable Hawks total. Dawson (27) and Howell got the Academy off to a lively 74-run start, which James Vince (63) capitalised on to take his season's tally past the 400 mark. Howell, who went on to make 100, eased the Academy to 250-7 off 58.3 overs which proved too intimidating for Andover who collapsed to 82 with Dawson taking 5-22 and Chris Morgan 2-14.
Havant, firm favourites to land a second consecutive crown, completed a 48-run win over second placed Bournemouth at Chapel Gate.Only six points separated the pair going into the top-of-the-table clash but the outcome, coupled with the fact that Havant have three easy-looking matches coming up, suggests a conclusion that is now foregone.
Ben Walker celebrated his maiden Premier League century and captain Richard Hindley added another six-wicket haul to his collection. Walker’s ten-boundary 103 was the cornerstone of Havant’s 242-5 – the left-hander reaching his century shortly before the end of the innings.
In reply, Dorset all rounder Darren Cowley, with a circumspect 60, did his bit striking two sixes and eight fours to hold Bournemouth together but the middle order had no answer to Hindley's off spin (6-75) and crumbled to 194 all out.
James Hibberd produced one of the best individual all round performances on record for the league single-handedly steering South Wilts to a 16-run win off St Cross Symondians at the Royal Green Jackets Ground with an innings of 85 and a match winning haul of 5-61.
South Wilts were in the mire at 16-3 when Hibberd arrived at the crease. He shared a century fourth-wicket stand with Rob Wade (45) and, after a four-wicket burst from Hampshire’s Jimmy Adams (4-39), was eventually ninth out with the South Wilts total at 190. Adams (23) and Archie Fellowes (37) took the St Cross reply to 60-1 when Hibberd struck again, this time with the ball and with Ross Crick (3-38) reduced St Cross to 94-5, effectively ending any realistic prospect of a home win.
Hibberd’s performance won him the Cricket-Hockey.com Player of the Week award, to be presented at the Southern Electric Premier League’s CCC Cup semi-final against the Surrey Championship.
