No brakes on Granta juggernaut

ECB logo - small version

Great Witchingham were unable to stop the Granta juggernaut at Walcis Park where the brothers Park conspired to speed up their charge at the 2010 Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League title.

Witchingham batted first and made 154 all out in 63 overs with Craig Park picking up five wickets. While four batsmen made it to 20, none of them went on to 30 plus.

Granta wobbled at the start of their innings, losing Creese, Hesketh and Rice for just four runs. However, Craig Park produced a batting display to match his bowling making 92 while brother Sean made 54 not out to see Granta home by six wickets.

Saffron Walden kept their title hopes alive with a comprehensive win over relegation threatened Clacton. The visitors were asked to bat first and were dismissed for just 133 after 57 overs.

Essex starlet Michael Comber making the only noteworthy contribution with 51 not out. Tim Smith took 4-12 from 13 overs while there were two wickets each for Tom Westley and Andy Laws.

In reply Walden lost Hurford and Westley cheaply, but Jason Gallian(78 not out) and Charlie Knightley (37 not out) saw them home for an eight wicket win.

The other title contenders, Swardeston, also won to keep up their challenge, beating Horsford by five wickets in a low scoring affair at The Common.

Horsford were asked to bat first and were shot out for 72 from 33 overs. There were four wickets for Mark Thomas and three for Jaden Hatwell.

Swardeston's batting order had a rather odd look to it with Hatwell coming in at seven and Richard Sims at six.

However, both were needed to bat as Swardeston limped to 76 for five. Ryan Findlay was the pick of the Horsford bowlers with 3-23 from 12 overs.

There was an exciting finish at The Victory Ground where a win for Halstead would have eased their relegation fears considerably.

Bury won he toss and invited Halstead to bat first where they made 163 all out in the 56th over. Matt Surry top scoring with 33. Tom Huggins picket up 4-29 while Simon Rees bagged 3-32 from 18.

Bury lost Huggins in he first over and Freddie Klokker soon joined him back in the hutch. Nick Lee (36) and Chris Warn (67) steadied things and when Warn was out Bury needed three to win.

Chris Lomas got two of them but last man Tom Rowbotham was bowled by Matt Henry with the scores level and the result was a tie.

Fakenham and Mallards fought out a draw at Highfield Lawn, where James Marshall just shaded the man of the match award.

Marshall made 103 not out in Mallards total of 241 for nine (innings closed) then took 4-24 from eight overs as Fakenham finished on 181 for seven with James Hill making 63.

The day's other game between Norwich and Burwell at Ingham also ended in a draw. Burwell batted first and made 150 all out (Flower 40, Goosen 42) with the evergreen Paul Wiseman taking 6-49.

The Norwich reply had barely started at 24 without loss when the heavens opened and the match was abandoned as a draw.
