Rain decimates NYSD premier league debut
Rain decimated the opening programme in the Darlington Building Society North Yorkshire & South Durham Premier Cricket League, with just one match making it to the starting pistol on the opening day of the season.
It was the local derby at Richmond that survived, and Barnard Castle provided stern opposition for one of the pre-season title favourites. It was just about honours even when the weather eventually brought the game to a premature end.
On a damp afternoon run scoring was always going to be difficult, but Barney got away to a great start as Ben Usher hit three fours and three sixes in a bright 39 as James Sutton (28) supported him well in an opening stand of 70.
The introduction of Shani Dissanayake then changed the complexion of the game as the Sri Lankan, back for his tenth consecutive season with the club, sent down 17 miserly overs in which he picked up 4-19.
With debutant Brad Elsworth also claiming two scalps the visitors struggled up to a score of 141 for nine in their 50 overs.
With the players having to leave the field twice for rain interruptions the Dalesmen made heavy weather of their run chase as Callum Prosser, Richard Borrowdale and Mike Dixon bagged a brace of wickets apiece.
The eventual end came with the hosts on 89 for six after 24 overs, the 11 points Barney claimed taking them to a first day lead in the league table.
