St Just crowned champions

St Just have retained the Jolly's Drinks Cornwall Premier League championship title for the fifth consecutive year having remained unbeaten for the entire season.

Their five wicket win over Falmouth last week sealed their victory though their final match against runners up Truro had to be abandoned due to bad light at Cape Road though the champions were presented with their 2008 trophy before celebrations got underway.

Needing 215 to win, St Just were 145 for six with eleven overs to go when the light was offered. Truro's 214 for six was based on Alex Tunnadine's 59, Ben Price's 52 and Jon Kent who made 43 not out.

In the battle to avoid relegation, Newquay got the eleven points they required at the start of play on the final day yesterday.

They had a higher scoring draw at Falmouth, taking thirteen points, while rivals Grampound Road dropped a point in winning by two wickets at home to Paul.

It effectively means Grampound Road ended four points short of survival. However the League are yet to officially confirm the relegated team. An official complaint has been received from Grampound Road concerning the cancellation of their game at St Austell on Monday.

The League are also looking into the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of Newquay's home game with St Just on the same day.

At Trescobeas Newquay made 184 for eight. Rob Harrison made 52 and Joe Crane and Paul Caldwell both passed 20. Neil Ivamy made an important 36 not out while Dave Neville took 3-21.

In reply, after a slow start, Falmouth ended nine runs short on 176 for seven. Duncan Ayres was 51 not out with Larry Martin making 28 and Antony Angove 26. Ivamy and Harrison completed fine all round games taking three wickets apiece.

Paul were dismissed for 157 at Grampound Road. Cas James made 28 after Craig Osborne, Tom Ruhrmund and Tom Hyslop all passed 20.

Mpho Sekhoto made 47 and Chris Roberts 53 but in a tense finale, three wickets fell on 148 before Lewis Sanders and Tom Turner hit the winning runs with Dave Twigg and Kevin Snell taking three wickets apiece.

Werrington ended the season on a high with a 97 run home win over St Austell. They made 232 for seven with Mark Horwell making 62, Mark Hodgson 50 and Ben Smeeth 47. Gary Bone took 4-45.

Ben Smeeth then took 6-37 as St Austell were all out for 135 with five overs remaining. Matthew Rowe made 44
