Walsall down Barnt Green

ECB logo - small version

A commanding performance by Walsall, against current leaders Barnt Green, has kept the 2008 title race alive, reducing Barnt Green's lead to 22 points over the reigning champions, at the top of the table.

Although Walsall were unable to press home their advantage on the day to clinch a win, the result offers them hope that the season is not yet over, while Knowle & Dorridge, Himley and Wolverhampton, also all retain hopes of a late tilt at the title.

Walsall who piled up 242 for three, with Brad Wilson hitting 88 and man-of-the-match, Mo Sheikh, undefeated on 84.

In reply, Barnt Green crawled to 163 for five, with Richard Hall scoring 59.

In a match reduced to 30 overs a side, due to a late start, Knowle & Dorridge dismissed Walmley for 117, in response to their own total of 143 for eight. Greg Ricketts clinched the man-of-the-match award, taking 5-69 for Walmley, but the defining performance came from Travis Friend, with 4-21, as Walmley slid to defeat.

The current leader in the Birmingham Midshires man-of-the-match award table is TP Singh and he added another one to his list, with a dominant performance against Leamington Spa.

Singh hit 104 and Chris Pearce scored 55 in Himley's 245 for six declared, in 53 overs, with Faisal Irfan taking 4-56 for Leamington.

The South Warwickshire outfit hung on at 190 for six, after teenagers Alex Phillips (82) and Tom Lewis (42) resisted bravely, but West Bromwich Dartmouth's winning draw at Kenilworth Wardens sees Leamington return to the relegation zone after a two week break.

Singh's domination of the match continued with two wickets and two catches.

Moeen Ali continued where he left off, after last week's unbeaten 164, by smashing 90 out of a total of 161 for nine, as Paul Rowe took 4-44 for Wardens. Ali, then, took 4-23 to support TP Sudhindra's 4-21, as Wardens clung on at 130 for nine, in a match reduced to 48 overs a side, after a delayed start.

Wolverhampton re-ignited their season with a crushing seven wicket victory over Shifnal, who remain rooted to the foot of the table after they were all out for 105.

The wickets were shared by Sairaj Bahatule (5-35) and Jack Snape (5-41) before 40 from Anish Kapil extinguished any Shifnal hopes of victory.

Warwickshire's Ian Westwood returned for Moseley, after a broken thumb kept him out of the county side for the last six weeks, and he proved his fitness with an award-winning 61, as his side cruised past Kidderminster Victoria's 134 for seven, with six overs to spare, in a match reduced to 31 overs a side.

Josh Knappett's 63 was the highlight for the Vics, with Usman Awan finishing with 4-18 for Moseley.
