Werrington respond to captain's call
Werrington returned to winning ways in the Jolly's Drinks Cornwall Premier League with an emphatic seven wicket victory over second-placed Paul who promptly dropped down the table.
Last week, Werrington skipper Ben Smeeth appealed to his squad to raise their game after posting just one victory from five matches despite having three county players among their ranks.
When Paul rattled up 235 for five in their 55 overs, thanks to half centuries from Tom Hyslop (53) and Kelvin Snell, who made 58 from 51 balls, it seemed his cries might have fallen on deaf ears.
But Sebastian Street (85) added 104 for the second wicket with the captain Smeeth (76 not out) and then the Smeeth brothers (Alex 44 not out) put on an unbroken 77 to win the game with almost four overs to spare.
St Austell crashed to a five wicket defeat against Cornwall Premier League leaders St Just and tumbled to the bottom of the table just one point behind Newquay.
They were dismissed for 152 in the 49th over even though their opening partnership of Matt Ellison (18) and Matt Rowe put on 33 for the first wicket. Rowe went on to make 51 before being fourth out with the score at 90.
The innings fell away when Adam Barrett hit his straps, taking 3-46 and Nick George (3-29) and brother Mark (2-33) made sure no one was allowed to settle.
Needing 153 to win, David Roberts (43) and Neil Curnow (25) added 55 before both were caught behind off James Maycock having put on 55 for the first wicket. Gary Thomas and Darren Cudby went cheaply before Gavin Edwards, with 39 not out, saw St Just home with five wickets still in tact and more than 32 overs to spare. Maycock, on his debut, bowled tidily to finish with 2-27.
Falmouth ended Grampound Road's winning run with a four wicket win at Trescobeas to move into second spot. The 'Road' made 173 all out with Kris Harris, returning to the side, hitting 39 and Dave Wilton 30 after the first five wickets fell for 105.
Dave Neville took 4-25 and Duncan Ayres 2- 22 off ten overs. Falmouth were well served by Antony Angove who made 53 and Ayres with 39 after three wickets had fallen for 43. Newquay moved off the bottom following a five wicket home win over Truro.
Needing 178, Adam Cocking (32) and Barry Purchase (38) dropped anchor after the openers had gone for 23 then Rob Harrison cruised to 69 not out to finish the job with fifteen balls to spare. Truro's 177 all out saw Tom Sharp make 31 and Aaron Pennell 43. There were useful late runs from Chris Phillips (30) and Alex Taylor with 32 not out. Neil Ivamy took 4-36 and Harrison 4-54.
