Strauss accepts life membership of MCC

Middlesex CCC

Andrew Strauss has become the 27th former England captain to be awarded honorary life membership of MCC.

The 35-year-old, who retired from all cricket last August, has been acknowledged for his exceptional contribution to the game.

In addition to representing England on 231 occasions, Strauss captained the team to back-to-back Ashes victories and contributed 21 Test hundreds to place sixth on his country’s all-time list.

He enjoyed particular success at Lord’s, the home of his county Middlesex, scoring 1,562 Test runs with the aid of five centuries. Strauss’ record first-class score, an unbeaten 241 against Leicestershire, also came at the home of cricket in 2011.

After being selected as the latest honorary life member of MCC, Andrew Strauss said: "It is a great honour to receive this invitation."

MCC president Mike Griffith said: “Andrew Strauss had a remarkable cricketing career. His achievements for Middlesex and England - particularly at Lord’s - are numerous and rightly celebrated.

“I am absolutely delighted that he has accepted MCC’s invitation of honorary life membership of the club, and I very much look forward to seeing him at Lord’s many times in the future.

A thrilled Strauss, who is an alumni of the MCC Universities scheme having read Economics at Durham, said: “It is, of course, a great honour to receive this invitation and I clearly had no hesitation in accepting.”
