Leeds & Broomfield opener Riti Patel goes on the attack during her fine half-century against Guildford
Leeds & Broomfield beat Brighton & Hove and Guildford to book a place in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Cricket Southern League Super8 Twenty20 Competition.
In the first match the hosts overhauled Guildford's score of 113 for two with more than four overs to spare thanks to a fine innings of 53 retired by opener Riti Patel.
In the second game Brighton & Hove showed what a force they are by posting a mammoth score of 201 for one against Guildford with Sian Price, Kiara Green and Sofie Cawley all reaching 50. Guildford's reply got off to a flyer with 18 off the first over but they subsided to 97 all out.
The scene was set for a clash between the two sides with a 100 per cent record in the competition.
Batting first, Leeds & Broomfield's Riti Patel (26) and Melanie Abeysinghe (17) posted 49 off five overs before they both fell in the same over to Kiara Green.
Captain Michelle Johnson-Kerr consolidated with Elysa Hubbard before she was run out by a direct hit. Georgina White (24 not out) played some fine shots while playing second fiddle to Hubbard who batted aggressively for 51 to help Leeds & Broomfield to a respectable 149 for three off their 20 overs.
Brighton & Hove opener Price (32) continued her fine run with a flurry of boundaries including two sixes until Hannah Mowbray bowled her with a perfect delivery in the fourth over. Cawley and Kath Sealey kept the scoreboard moving along with regular boundaries on a fast outfield.
With both players in the 40s, Brighton & Hove needed just 12 to win off the last 13 deliveries with five wickets in hand when Melanie Abeysinghe produced a fine ball that turned and bounced to bowl Sealey.
Johnson-Kerr handed the ball to Hannah Mowbray who swung the game back to her side.
After her direct hit caused a run out, Mowbray clean bowled Cawley for 49 before holding her nerve with six needed off the final ball, snatching a caught and bowled off Parisa Safi to finish with 4-19.
