Marylebone Cricket Club has pledged its support to women cricketers and female competitors in other sports by becoming one of the sponsors for the Sunday Times sportswomen of the year awards, in association with Sony Ericsson.
The three-year deal will give MCC sponsorship of the young sportswoman of the year award and will see Lord's become the host venue for the glamorous annual event.
England’s Nicky Shaw and Caroline Atkins are both recent graduates of the MCC Young Cricketers’ scheme and the MCC’s sponsorship of the prestigious Sunday Times award adds further gravitas to women participating in all sorts of sporting activities.
Keith Bradshaw, MCC secretary and chief executive, said: “Women's sport continues to grow in stature, popularity and excellence.
“These awards are the ultimate recognition of excellence. We are extremely proud that Lord's will play host to this prestigious event and that MCC will become sponsor of the young sportswoman of the year award.”
Alex Butler, sports editor of the Sunday Times, added: “MCC has invested heavily in the development of women's cricket over recent years, so we are delighted that they have become a sponsor to our awards ceremony.
“Lord's is an iconic sporting venue full of tradition and memorable experiences - it provides the perfect setting for us to recognise the biggest achievements within women's sport.”
