Anya Shrubsole continued her supreme form in the Women's World Cup, delivering a career-best effort as England cruised past South Africa in their must-win Super Sixes clash.

Needing to emerge victorious by impressive margins in their last two matches to have hope of reaching the final, the defending champions were carried by the 21-year-old seamer initially today.

Yolandi Potgieter, Trisha Chetty & Anya Shrubsole

Anya Shrubsole makes Yolandi Potgieter the first of three lbw victims en route to her one-day international-best figures of 5-17

Shrubsole, the tournament's leading wicket-taker with 13 scalps, was in irresistible form, claiming the first five wickets - for figures of 5-17 - before Holly Colvin and Katherine Brunt took one apiece.

The seamer trapped Yolandi Potgieter, Mignon du Preez and Cri-zelda Brits leg before, bowled Marizanne Kapp and had Trisha Chetty taken at short midwicket.

Danni Wyatt then mopped up South Africa's tail, finishing with 3-7 to leave England requiring 78 for victory.

Attention quickly turned to how quickly England, desperate to boost their net run-rate, could chase that total.

Picking up where she left off with the ball, Wyatt quickly flayed three fours through the off side to get the ball rolling.

Yet Charlotte Edwards then picked out third-man off Marizanne Kapp and Chloe Tyron had Wyatt caught at mid-on prior to bowling Sarah Taylor, who departed for a third successive duck.

Lydia Greenway and Arran Brindle did not panic, though, finding boundaries all round the wicket in easing England to victory in just 9.3 overs.

Edwards’ side are fourth in the Super Six table, level on four points with New Zealand and West Indies who play tomorrow. Australia’s nine-wicket defeat of Sri Lanka today took them to eight points and put them into Sunday’s final.

England Innings

6:23am - END OF MATCH; ENGLAND WIN BY SEVEN WICKETS - Lovely stuff from Greenway, who pulls Marcia Letsoalo for back-to-back boundaries before her partner drives and cuts two of her own. The former then finishes things off with successive one-bounce fours off Sunette Loubser! That's a brilliant win, in just 9.3 overs, that keeps England alive. Greenway is unbeaten on 25 from 19 balls and Brindle 28 from 16.

Lydia Greenway

6:16am - Brindle adds a couple more boundaries to her tally and England move on to 56 after just eight overs. Good stuff.

6:12am - More runs for Brindle, who edges through third man for a boundary before adding another via a delicious drive.

6:07am - Good response from Lydia Greenway, who drives Kapp powerfully through cover-point for four before Arran Brindle takes three in the same area off Tryon in the next over.

5:57am - WICKET! Taylor b Tryon 0; Eng 26/3 - A third successive duck for Sarah Taylor, who is bowled trying to turn Tryon to leg.

5:54am - WICKET! Wyatt c Ismail b Tryon 14; Eng 24/1 - Chloe Tryon gets her first breakthrough, having Wyatt caught at mid-on. Wickets do not affect net run-rate, so England will continue to attack here.

5:50am - WICKET! Edwards c Tryon b Kapp 6; Eng 23/1 - Edwards departs looking to continue the good tempo as she is caught at deep third-man off Kapp.

5:46am - More excellent stuff from England; Wyatt is freeing her arms and peppering the cover region, with two further fours adding to Edwards' first.

5:40am - Danni Wyatt gives England a fine start, hitting Marizanne Kapp for four as seven come from the opening set of six. Charlotte Edwards' troops will be looking to wrap this up within 10 overs, I would imagine.

South Africa Innings

5:24am - END OF INNINGS; SOUTH AFRICA 77 ALL OUT - And that's that. Marcia Letsoalo is caught and bowled by Wyatt and South Africa are dismissed for 77. Edwards et al will be hoping to knock these off quickly.

5:19am - WICKET! Loubser c Edwards b Wyatt; SA 70/9 - Sunette Loubser does not last long, hitting to Charlotte Edwards at mid-on for a duck. England are on the brink of dismissing South Africa.

Katherine Brunt

5:15am - WICKET! Ismail c Taylor b Wyatt 16; SA 69/8 - Ismail appears to have heeded my advice, striking Brunt for back-to-back boundaries. However, the fun does not last as she is caught behind off Danni Wyatt soon after.

5:07am - Dane van Niekerk and Shabnim Ismail are opting for a defensive approach. I cannot help but think they would be better just having a go in these conditions.

4:54am - WICKET! Tryon lbw Brunt 0; SA 47/7 - Brunt returns for a second spell and grabs her first wicket, rapping Chloe Tryon on the pad and gaining a positive lbw verdict.

4:45am - Shrubsole finishes with career-best figures of 5-17 from her 10 overs. That's an outstanding contribution. And that's an understatement.

4:42am - WICKET! Fritz c Greenway b Colvin 10; SA 42/6 - And we have another wicket-taker! Holly Colvin gets the sixth as Lydia Greenway holds the catch to remove Fritz.

4:29am - WICKET! Kapp b Shrubsole 13; SA 42/5 - And that's exactly what they will do if Shrubsole has her way. A deserved fifth wicket for the 21-year-old, who castles Kapp.

4:20am - Against Australia, England allowed a good middle-order partnership following a similar start. They'll be hoping to keep up the pressure here.

4:12am - Shandre Fritz gets under way with a four first ball before Kapp adds boundaries in successive overs, off Brunt and Shrubsole.

4:02am - WICKET! Brits lbw Shrubsole 4; SA 18/4 - Do I need to tell you who's got it? Shrubsole has a fourth, pinning Cri-zelda Brits in front. Sizzling stuff.

3:55am - WICKET! Chetty c Gunn b Shrubsole 9; SA 12/3 - And there's another one. Brilliant stuff from Shrubsole, who continues to look threatening. Chetty goes this time, caught smartly at short midwicket by Jenny Gunn.

Anya Shrubsole

3:52am - Chetty eases the pressure somewhat with a boundary and will be looking to build a partnership with Marizanne Kapp.

3:43am - WICKET! du Preez lbw Shrubsole 0; SA 5/2 - Brilliant from Shrubsole, who makes it two in an over by ousting skipper Mignon du Preez in the same fashion. England are causing problems aplenty.

3:38am - WICKET! Potgetier lbw Shrubsole 1; SA 5/1 - There is simply no stopping Shrubsole at the moment. She has opener Potgetier trapped in front in her opening over and England are off to the perfect start.

3:37am - South Africa make a solid start as Trisha Chetty finds a boundary in the opening over, sent down by Katherine Brunt, after Yolandi Potgieter gets off the mark with a single.
