Wyatt keen to seize the moment
Danielle Wyatt chatted ahead of the summer series with New Zealand
England women have few happy memories of the World Twenty20 but for Danielle Wyatt it proved to be a watershed moment in her embryonic international career.
Unused in the first two matches as the holders were eliminated after losses to Australia and West Indies, the 19-year-old was selected to play in England's final group game against South Africa.
The off-spinner responded with figures of 4-11, which earned her the player of the match award and the knowledge she can perform at the highest level.
"When they announced I was going to be in the starting XI I was really excited and up for it," Wyatt told ecb.co.uk. "I just went out there, enjoyed myself and it paid off.
"I got man of the match. I have the medal in my room on the shelf."
Wyatt's performance helped England win their only match of a disappointing tournament which saw Australia narrowly beat New Zealand in the final.
New Zealand, who have now lost three consecutive finals, are England's opponents this summer with three Twenty20 and five one-day internationals scheduled.
England will be keen to show they still deserve their world number one status while New Zealand, who lost out to Charlotte Edwards' side in the finals of the World Cup and World Twenty20 last year, will no doubt want some degree of revenge.
"We know that New Zealand are tough opposition," said Wyatt. "They have got into the final of the World Twenty20 for the last two years. We know they like to hit the ball hard but if we keep to our basics we should be all right."
Despite her match-winning efforts in the Caribbean, Wyatt, one of four slow bowlers in the England squad, is not guaranteed a place in the first Twenty20 in Chelmsford on Tuesday.
"We have got four spinners in the squad now so I've got to keep performing well in training and keep taking the opportunity and doing well," she added. "Hopefully I will be in the starting XI for the first Twenty20 in Chelmsford."
