Rain frustrates England women

Rain denied England women the chance to press for a series whitewash over India after the final one-day international at Hove was washed out.

Just like their male colleagues against South Africa, the women had to settle for a 4-0 NatWest Series triumph to end their international summer.

Only four overs were possible today, with rain first delaying the start by three and a half hours and reducing the match to 32 overs per side.

The spectators saw barely 15 minutes’ action, though, before the heavens opened once more and forced play to be abandoned at 7pm.

India were seven without loss when the players left the field for the final time, having been asked to bat first by England captain Charlotte Edwards.

Katherine Brunt was named player of the series, having taken six wickets at just over 11 apiece and boasting an economy rate of fewer than two an over.

It may have represented a soggy end to England’s summer campaign, but they emerged from a hugely successful programme having won all of their completed games.

A comprehensive victory over India represented their third series success, West Indies and South Africa having been disposed of earlier in the season.
