Greenway targets team effort

Lydia Greenway is confident England can fire as a unit when they seek to add the World Twenty20 to their World Cup and Ashes crowns.

With such star names as Wisden Cricketer of the Year Claire Taylor and captain Charlotte Edwards in the ranks, England have often been able to rely on them to make the difference.

However, Greenway is determined to play her part and make the most of any starts she gets with the bat, when the women’s teams get under way on June 11.

Greenway & Co played back-to-back matches against the women’s academy yesterday as the hosts continue to build towards the main event.

“That’s what we’ve spoken about in the past, rather than just two people contributing, a lot of people contributing and I think that’s what we’ve done well today,” she told ECBtv.

“I think everyone with the bat and the ball has contributed so we want to look to continue to do that going into the Twenty20s.”

Edwards and Sarah Taylor were fine batting form in the first match as England wrapped up a comfortable victory.

Beth Morgan made a useful contribution in the second game which also went well for the senior side.

“One or two wickets can change the game and I think we’ve got to realise, we do realise, that we’ve got to step up and even if they do get out, go on to make good scores,” Greenway added.

“I think we did do that today, although Lottie (Edwards) obviously got a good score today, but in the second game Beth stepping up massively there and batting really, really well.”

The academy games followed on from a series of warm-up matches against male opposition, which tested the World Cup winners.

And Greenway was enthused by the team’s performances against male and female opponents.

“It’s been really good today,” she continued. “After playing the guys we were put massively out of our comfort zone and to come in and play, not a standard below but girls aren’t as powerful and we ourselves aren’t as powerful.

“So it’s good to get out there and express ourselves a bit more and prove to ourselves that we can get really good scores and bowl teams out.”
